Day 5 – Short Visit To Sydney

Hi Everyone, Welcome to Day 5 of our voyage. Overnight we made good speed north and by morning brief we were located only 2nm to the south of Sydney Heads. Once we had completed morning brief all sail was handed in and we proceeded to enter Sydney Harbour via the Western Channel berthing at Fleet Base East 5a at 1040. The reason for our short notice return to Sydney was that we have been having intermitted faults with the ship’s new switchboard (I think it is possessed) and really needed some experts to look at it and conduct some repairs. Whilst alongside the Youth Crew went ashore with their Watch Leaders and conducted mid voyage chats. This discussion with the Youth Crew helps us to gauge how the voyage is going and to redirect our attention to specific areas of the voyage if required. Once everyone was back onboard they were given some well deserved down time so that they could do some washing, spend some quality time with each other or just catch up on some much needed sleep. At 1415 everyone was again mustered at midships and I gave my presentation on sail theory. On completion I was notified that the repairs to the switchboard were complete so preparations were made to sail.At 1630 we departed our berth and once out on the harbour the ship was brought under fore and aft sail and we again departed Sydney Harbour via the Western Channel. Once clear of Sydney heads in very pleasant conditions we again shaped a course to the south The time is now 2030 and we are located 5nm to the south east of Maroubra Beach sailing close hauled on a port tack in moderate 10-14kt ENE winds. Overnight the Youth Crew will complete the BEAREX (teambuilding, communication and initiative exercise) and continued to consolidate their navigation and sailing skills as we continue to enjoy another night at sea. Until tomorrow, take care. Yours Aye Captain Gav
