Day 3 – Another Busy Day On YE

Hi Everyone, Welcome to Day 3 of our voyage. Overnight we continued to make good speed to the south and despite a number of the Youth Crew succumbing to the dreaded sailors curse of ‘seasickness’ spirits amongst the crew remained high. By 0800 this morning we were located 60nm to the north west of Sandy Cape (most northern point of Fraser Island), motor sailing, close hauled under a reduced fore and aft sail plan. Throughout the day we continued with the training program and kept the Youth Crew busy with a number of activities including their first set of ‘Rope Races’. This activity is run by Sumo the Engineer and teaches the Youth Crew to identify the many lines, sheets, halyards and safety equipment which is kept onboard Young Endeavour. On completion Taff gave a brief on how to set the mainsail and jib then in perfect 16-18kt winds the ship was brought under fore and aft sail. With the ship now sailing along at a respectable 6kts, tacking stations were called and in extremely good sailing conditions the Youth Crew successfully completed their first set of tacks as a crew (put the bow of the ship through the wind). On completion of this activity we altered course back to the south and continued to make good ground to the south. So far this evening we have experienced all types of weather conditions including, wind gusts of up to 30kts and some solid rain which has now moderated to 15kts and clear sky’s. This has made for some interesting sailing but has kept all of us on our toes. The time is now 2015 and we have just tacked ship, altered course to the east, and are now making ground to our planned anchorage at Fraser Islands Platypus Bay were we intend anchoring tomorrow morning. The Youth Crew will remain in sea watches overnight and continue to develop their newly acquired mariner skills Until tomorrow evening, take care. Yours Aye Captain Gav
