Day 2 – Moreton Bay to Sea…and the Dreaded Green Goblin!

Ahoy shipmates…Day 2….a very busy day. Last night all but one of the youth crew made it to the top of the foremast…an outstanding achievement. Climbs were complete by 1030 and then the youth crew headed to bed for a good night’s sleep. Sailmaster Ivanka woke us all at 0630 with an interesting choice of music and after a quick early morning activity, an in-depth safety brief focusing on safety equipment onboard, and morning brief we finally left HMAS Moreton around 0930…waving to some family and friends who had gathered on a wharf nearby. Once we had passed under the Gateway bridge the youth crew were introduced to the delights of ‘happy hour’ or cleaning stations…keeping the ship clean and hygienic is very important! Once complete, the rest of the morning was spent conducting sail setting and furling drills in preparation for taking the ship to tacking stations later in the afternoon. After a delicious lunch from Marcus and some more sail handling drills, a few of the youth crew lay aloft to cast loose the gaskets (untie) the topsail and mainsail. At 1600 we finally cleared Moreton Bay just off Caloundra, the Sailmaster gave the main and square sails brief, and we set a full press of fore and aft sails, plus the topsail. The ship was then called to tacking stations and we completed two successful tacks before commencing our transit north in a freshening southeasterly breeze…perfect sailing conditions. Unfortunately once we left the relatively calm waters of Moreton Bay, the dreaded Green Goblin (seasickness) struck with dramatic effect…suffice to say not many ate dinner! The youth crew will commence their watches from 2000 tonight and will be introduced to the duties of watch on deck, including helming, lookout, navigation and engine room and upper deck rounds. The winds should remain from the south before backing to the east over the next 24 hours. Good news is that we have shut down engines and are now under sail…yeeha! Whilst conditions aren’t that rough….it will take a few days for the youth crew to gain their sea legs…in the mean time they are pressing on! That’s it for now…over the next few days I will encourage some of the youth crew to say a few words in Captain’s Log…if they’re not still green. Fair winds, Captain Kenny.
