Day 12 – Whangamumu Hbr to Great Barrier Island
Ahoy there shipmates,Sail Master Matt woke the crew at 0630 and we had a quick breakfast, put the seaboat in the water and then effected a transfer of six of our returnees for six of the Spirit of NZ trainees. We then weighed anchor and commenced our passage to Great Barrier Island (GBI) in company with Spirit.Initially we motor sailed but eventually the course we needed to steer to get to GBI prevented us from carrying sails so they were furled again. We held a brief mid-morning so we could tell the Kiwis the plan for the day and show them some of the lighter side of life in YE. Salty had a speaking part and used some returnee actors to demonstrate the origin of the expression ‘figurehead’ and why toilets are called ‘heads’ in ships.During the transit to GBI we got the Kiwis climbing to the Top Gallant yard and then after lunch they got to do some sail handling and navigation. During the afternoon Tecla joined us again and at 1800 all three Ships, led by Spirit, entered Fitzroy Harbour through the very scenic Man-o-war passage. We anchored within 1000 yards of Spirit and, following one of Luke’s sensational teak deck BBQs, we farewelled our new Kiwi friends and transferred them back to Spirit, in exchange for our six returnees. Both groups enjoyed the opportunity to experience each others’ Ship immensely. It is intended to remain at anchor here overnight and catch up with the Kiwis ashore for a hike over lunch tomorrow, followed by a BBQ dinner ashore. We will sail at 0800 Wed 23 for our next commitment at Kawau Island.Yours AyeCaptain Mike       “Â

Thank you Tarvi, Kaeden and Matt for your narrative of today's events. Intentions are to remain at anchor in Hunters Bay, just off HMAS Penguin, home of the RAN Diving School, a place close to my heart, having spent many a day there under training as a young Officer! The plan is to weigh anchor and proceed to HMAS Waterhen, in Waverton, to pick up our Community Day Sailors from the Windgap Foundation and take them for a sail around the harbour for 3 hours. The Youth Crew will help us host our visitors and give them an experience of Young Endeavour. We will drop them back to Waverton and then proceed to anchor in the harbour where we will have a good view of the Bridge and the Opera House for the Youth Crew's last night onboard. Until tomorrow. Yours Aye, Captain Mike
