Day 10 – Newcastle and a Final Farewell!

Ahoy shipmates…Day 10…the penultimate! Today we departed Nelson Bay and made our way to Newcastle, arriving at Thales Wharf around 1445. Once secure alongside the youth crew were ferried to the other side of the river for end of voyage talks, a chance to reflect on the last 10 days…and also another opportunity for coffee and snacks! By 1700 all were back onboard and after the final round of rope races, they lay aloft to harbour furl the square sails. As rope race champions blueys were on the highest yard, the top gallant, followed by whiteys on the topsail, and reddies on the course. These will be their positions when we come alongside Tug Wharf 4 at 1000 tomorrow, manning the yards as in days gone by. Once the harbour furls were complete, pizza was served up on deck as we all enjoyed a final sunset together. The staff then performed a quick skit (not so good) to entertain the youth crew before we rolled into a slide show, their final Command Day task. Some oohs, ahhs and laughs were had as we all looked back on our adventure together…Sydney Harbour, Patonga Beach, Jerusalem Bay, Jervis bay, Nelson Bay…not a bad effort for 10 days. Throw in some fantastic sailing and we have had a pretty amazing adventure together. Sadly all good things must come to an end. Tomorrow we farewell our young shipmates. They are all now forever part of the Young Endeavour family. My crew and I have thoroughly enjoyed having them join us on this magnificent vessel, and we wish them the very best for their future endeavours. For the final time this voyage I bid you fair winds and following seas…Captain Kenny…out!
