Day 1 – Welcome Aboard and First Night Climbs
Ahoy shipmates and welcome to Voyage 7/19. Many thanks to Captain Mike for returning for Voyage 6/19 to allow me some time off…the break was nice but I am looking forward very much to our next adventures en route Mackay. At 1400 today under sunny skies the youth crew embarked in Young Endeavour at HMAS Moreton in Bulimba, Brisbane. After they had stowed their bags below, and friends and family quickly toured the ship, we all gathered at midships for the formal welcome and introduction. We have 27 young adventurers this trip, and with 10 staff crew we are almost full…the more the merrier. Notably today we had the final of five siblings from the Crowley family join as youth crew…with his other siblings on hand mark the occasion…very cool. We must be doing something right! On completion of the formal ceremony the youth crew farewelled loved ones and commenced ice breakers and detailed ship’s tours. We will be remaining alongside here in Bulimba tonight due to the lack of a suitable anchorage nearby…but it’s a perfect venue for our first night climbs. As I write the youth crew have full bellies after a delicious meal (and birthday cake) from Chef Marcus, and are being given the harness and safety aloft briefs before their first challenge of the voyage…laying aloft to the top of the foremast…some 30 odd metres above the deck…fun fun fun! While one watch climbs, the others will be going through some initial deck safety and line handling, as well as completing their full value contracts…outlining their hopes and fears for the voyage…and goals to be achieved!. We should wrap up around 10ish then the youth crew will hit the hay in preparation for a very busy day two, and the seven hour transit out of the Brisbane river and Moreton Bay. The intent at this point is to depart Bulimba around 0830-0845 tomorrow morning, and we should be passing Caloundra and hitting the open ocean around 1530 tomorrow afternoon…wave if you see us! The weather for the first few days looks promising…southerlies up to 25 knots…yeeha…perfect sailing conditions and we should be able to make good use of all our sails, including squares. Dear readers,
STS Young Endeavour is, by the definition and origin of her name, about Aussie youths trying hard to achieve something difficult. This voyage certainly provided that... and then some. A challenging experience from all angles and areas. Yet the Youth Crew prevailed and found success. They should therefore be justifiably proud of themselves for persevering, seeing the silver lining and never wavering in their mission to have a great adventure. I am very proud of all of them and I'm sure you are too!
9 Days ago 23 Youth Crew from all over Australia, came together to sail this vessel, have fun and challenge themselves. They have not only done that, but have faced and overcome fears, and learnt a lot about themselves and each other.
They leave with new skills, improved persistence, resilience and adaptability, as well as generally knowing they are more capable than what they probably thought. And of course, having made great new friends - most probably, friends for life. It never gets old for us staff members, as we truly love our work.
