Day 1 – Ahoy there Voyage 10 youthies!

Ahoy there shipmates, landlubbers and armchair sailors, it was fantastic to meet the lovely youth crew of Voyage 10 today in beautiful Airlie Beach, comprising 10 Aussie youth, from all over Queensland. I said a quick hello to everyone at 1500, then friends and family hugged it out farewelling their loved ones for the next 11 days. I told them to rest assured, we would take very good care of their young sailors, as we have a skilled and experienced staff crew for this voyage…
Namely: Sail Master – Jordo. Navigator – Tori. BOATSO – Keith. Red Watch Leader – Emma. White Watch Leader – TJ. Blue Watch Leader – Jemma. Chef – Keely and Engineer – Reggie.

As the marina was full, the ship was at anchor and thus seaboat transfers commenced, ferrying youthies to the ship. Once onboard, we said ahoy and introduced ourselves… then Watch Leaders kicked off the program with ice breakers and ships’ tours. A ripper dinner was served, then the Youth Crew were mustered at midships, where Keithy, our safety equipment and survival expert, gave a very thorough brief on YE’s safety equipment and then Reggie spoke of engines and plumbing and ships husbandry. Jordo then spoke to them about youth crew responsibilities and a few ‘guidelines’ to ensure communal harmony and unconditional positive regard for all. I spoke to them about what to expect over the next 10 days (time’s already ticking!) and ways to ensure maximum involvement in the program. Simply, to ‘get amongst it’, was the key. Y
outh crew then split into watches and commenced their seamanship training, consisting of line handling, safety and general principles. Meanwhile, we kicked off the census reporting for all personnel onboard. It’s going to be a big day tomorrow, and so our young crew turned in for a good nights sleep. Intention is to remain at anchor overnight, conducting first climbs in the forenoon and departing for sea after lunch. The adventure has begun… I wonder where we’ll be this time tomorrow night?
Good night and stay safe. Captain Adam Charlie Farley
