Day 07 – V18/25, Geelong – Sydney

HELLO YOU SALTY SEA DOGS!!!

The youthies morning sleep was abruptly interrupted by a false fire alarm in the galley before being awakened properly with ‘We Didn’t Start The Fire’ by Billy Joel. In the spirit of environmentalism, the breakfast for the crew was leftover pasta bake and fresh toasties.

Afterwards, the youthies jump started into rotations of tacking stations with all watches working in harmony to tack the ship. Youthies rotated through expert discussions with the Captain to understand how and why we tack the ship.

We filled up on Kingy’s hearty lunch of chicken parmis (not parmas!), above pub standard, which powered us through the rest of the day.

Captains Challenges ensured each watch was put to the test for setting and furling the important sails in preparation for tomorrow’s Youthies takeover: Command Day.

After we aced our assessments, we ‘swung’ into the frigid water of Jervis Bay. Tricks, flips and flops off the rope swing provided many laughs and cheers. Youthies sprawled across the deck, alongside our freshly washed clothes, and dried in the afternoon sun.

A perfect sunset drew the day to a close, including a BBQ on deck and an aquatic drive by from a Navy Mine Hunter ship – HMAS Diamantina. The sailors onboard received the renowned Young Endeavour ‘nautical greeting’ before they headed back out into the deep blue.

We continued the fun into the night. We decided our election process and used it to elect a Captain, Sailmaster, Watch Leaders, Chefs, and of course a sun safety captain and snack supervisor.

To finish off the night, Youthies snuggled up on deck to watch a sea-faring movie that resonated with us all after our blue water experiences in the Bass Strait – ‘Around Cape Horn’!!
