Day 03 – V12/25, Broome to Exmouth

Ahoy Shipmates,

The first true day at sea saw many of us purging the land demons during the morning. However, that didn’t stop us from becoming a busy bunch.

We started the day by setting and furling the forestaysail and the main staysail. We had some fun revising our deck safety through a friendly competition of rope races. Shoutout to Chef Kingy for the amazing croissants for Brekkie and the Nachos for lunch.

After lunch we all got to work as a team to learn the tacking stations. We learnt the different calls per sail, such as course brace well, topgallant braced well and of course the jib. We successfully tacked four times with each Youthie at work on different stations including heaving of the jib and setting and furling different sails. Communication and teamwork was great.

We finished off Day Three with Matty’s crash course on navigating at sea. This included a crash course in chartwork and learning the components which included the depth, compass rose and plotting latitude and longitude. He made us promise to always use a 2B pencil for charts and navigation otherwise he will cry.

Overnight we will all be taking our watches while we sail towards our next destination.
