Heavier Conditions
Ahoy Shipmates, This morning started with a refreshing early morning (0630) swim followed by breakfast. After morning brief gaskets were cast loose on the mainsail and squares, yards were braced and as the anchor was weighed YE sailed silently away from her anchorage at Great Keppel Island. Once in open water the ship was brought under full sail as we shaped course for the Percy Islands. By early afternoon the winds had strengthened from the south east and the swell increased to 2 meters. These weather conditions provided great sailing and before long the ship was sitting comfortably on 7kts with the YC enjoying the opportunity to experience some heavier sailing conditions. As the afternoon progressed we took the opportunity to shut down auxiliary power and let the YC experience 45 minutes of silent sailing. Once power was restored I conducted a fall from aloft’ exercise for the Staff Crew (with myself as the casualty), which besides providing valuable training for the Staff Crew it also gives the YC an appreciation for the quick responses and skill required by staff to rescue a person from the mast should an accident occur. Prior to dinner all watches complete Apples and Onions (communication exercise) and during the night all watches will complete a BEAREX (initiative, communication & teambuilding exercise). At the moment we are 22nm to the east of Townsend Island making good ground towards the Percy Islands.Yours AyeCaptain Gav

Thank you Tarvi, Kaeden and Matt for your narrative of today's events. Intentions are to remain at anchor in Hunters Bay, just off HMAS Penguin, home of the RAN Diving School, a place close to my heart, having spent many a day there under training as a young Officer! The plan is to weigh anchor and proceed to HMAS Waterhen, in Waverton, to pick up our Community Day Sailors from the Windgap Foundation and take them for a sail around the harbour for 3 hours. The Youth Crew will help us host our visitors and give them an experience of Young Endeavour. We will drop them back to Waverton and then proceed to anchor in the harbour where we will have a good view of the Bridge and the Opera House for the Youth Crew's last night onboard. Until tomorrow. Yours Aye, Captain Mike
