Day 1 Darwin Harbour

G’day shipmates,Welcome to Young Endeavour’s Voyage 15 for 2016. Our journey starts and finishes in the beautiful wild Top End city of Darwin. We have a magnificent tall ship, wind for our sails and the NT and WA coasts to explore. The potential is limitless and the sense of adventure is infectious. I would like to introduce the team of Staff Crew who will facilitate this voyage of adventure:Captain – Mike (me)Sail Master – KyleNavigator – James BWatch Officer – MartyWhite Watch Leader – MeganBlue Watch Leader – LaurenRed Watch Leader – James PChef – KeelyEngineer – HortoAssistant WLs – Tom, Matt & SOSSuper – DarrylVoyage 15 officially commenced at 1500 when the Youth Crew and their families and friends were welcomed onboard to have a quick look around the Ship and meet the staff crew before we sailed from HMAS Coonawarra to anchor in Darwin harbour and commence the afternoon’s activities. The youth crew divided into their watches and undertook a few ‘ice-breaker’ activities to get to know each other. That was followed by a detailed tour of the ship conducted by the watch leaders.Dinner followed with Chef Keely dazzling us with her culinary delights. Once we had cleaned up from dinner I had a chat with the youth crew about what their voyage would entail over the next 11 days. The theme of my chat was for everyone to make the best of their time onboard, seizing every opportunity to challenge themselves. Sail master Kyle had a chat after me and spoke on the code of conduct, safety onboard and living in close quarters with other people.Kyle then gave the climbing safety brief and we undertook the first night climb, during which the youth crew climbed to the upper most T’gallant yard on the foremast. This was quite a lengthy activity with each watch spending some time getting used to working on the yards. The last watch got back on deck at 2300.I am very pleased to report that all of the youth crew have done extremely well on their first day and I am, from the outset, impressed with both their efforts as individuals and as a team.Yours aye,Captain Mike
