Baptism of Fire

G’day Shipmates, I apologise for the delay in posting the log. It has been a combination of rough weather and computer glitches. It was a busy day yesterday that commenced at 0630 with ‘wakey wakey’. The forenoon was spent with morning brief, a safety brief, deck safety and line handling instruction before lunch and then finally weighing anchor and getting to sea. There was a strong wind warning current with 25-30 kts of SE winds forecast and that’s exactly what we got. The ship stayed in the lee of Magnetic Island as we practised setting and furling sails in pretty tough conditions. After a couple of wears (gybing) and a tack, I was happy to proceed and we shaped course to the NE with jib, forestaysail, main staysail and mainsail set. As we cleared the lee of the island the seas were quite rough and we were in for a rough ride. The ship tacked at midnight and again this morning at 0600. The YC are doing well in trying conditions. The strong winds are expected to remain for the next 36 hrs and we will continue to work our way to windward. Hopefully we will find a snug anchorage tomorrow evening. My next log entry will be this evening. Captain Gunna Carpe’ diem
