At Anchor, Waipara Bay, East Coast Nth Is NZ

Ahoy Me Hearties,Today we got ashore for the first time at Waipara Bay, on the east coast of the North Island. To tell you about her day and her voyage to date, here is Youth Crew member Sasha:So for the past three days we have had a crash course in running a ship. We’ve learnt how to tack the ship, take the helm (Drive this baby!!) and last night we even pursued a rescue call for a distressed ship_ liz and myself ended up on top of the yards, holding on with one hand trying to look out for the vessel. I’ve quickly realised that New Zealand is far colder than what I expected and have been braving the chill during night watches. Climbing the mast was a HUGE challenge but it’s a pretty good view up there. It has got to be said that I’m having the time of my life. I’m not going to lie, this experience is very challenging. It’s probably the most challenging thing I’ve ever done, but at the same time we are growing together as a youth crew and I’m getting great inspiration from the youth crew as a whole being committed to the tasks at hand.I miss my bed like crazy! And I miss all that I know and love back at home. But I don’t want to leave yet. On Friday the youth crew will be taking command of the ship for 24 hours, so we’re all preparing for that and learning as much as we can.Miss you Mum and Dad and all my mates back home.I better get back to washing my clothes on the deck before the sun goes away.peace outSashaThanks Sasha, sounds like you are having fun. Tonight we will weigh anchor and head out to sea on our passage to the Hauraki Gulf. Tomorrow we should pass White Island, which is an active volcano, before we get to anchor in Mercury Bay at about sunset.Until tomorrow, shipmates,Yours Aye,ChrisChris GallowayCommander, RANCommanding Officer
