At Anchor Refuge Cove

Hi Everyone, Following a restful night at Deal Island it was another early start to our day. The anchor was weighed at 0600 this morning and Young Endeavour departed East Cove, transiting south through Murray Pass and entering an unusually calm Bass Strait. Once in open water the ship was brought under fore and aft sail and a new course shaped for Wilson’s Promontory. During the morning I conducted my sail theory presentation which was followed by a demonstration on how to set and clew-up the squares sails. On completion in perfect sailing conditions the ship was brought under a full press of sail for the first time for this voyage. Unfortunately these conditions did not last and by early afternoon the wind had again moderated to less than 5kts. Given this lack of wind all sail was handed in and we proceeded into anchor in Wilson’s Promontory’s ‘Refuge Cove’. Once safely at anchor the Youth Crew were ferried ashore with their Watch Leaders were they completed mid voyage talks then enjoyed some free time to explore this spectacular cove and play some beach touch footy. Due to a forecasted cold front passing over Bass Strait this evening I have decided to remain at anchor in the safe confines of Refuge Cove so that we can continue with our training program. Overnight the ship will remain in sea watches and the Youth Crew will complete the “Bear Exercise” which is a problem solving, teamwork and communication exercise. Tomorrow morning we will depart Refuge Cove and in what is expected to be favourable conditions (Paige’s forecast) continue making ground to Port Phillip Bay.Until tomorrow, take care Yours Aye Captain Gav
