A Productive Day

Hi Everyone, Welcome to Day 2 of our Voyage. The Youth Crew were awake and on deck early this morning to witness a brilliant Melbourne sunrise. We kicked of the morning with a getting to know you exercise followed by the normal huge Young Endeavour breakfast. At 0755 the Youth Crew were mustered on the port side of the bridge and introduced to the traditional ceremony of colours (raise flags and sing National Anthem) and morning brief. On completion it was straight into cleaning stations (this part of the morning we call Happy Hour’) followed by a very comprehensive safety equipment brief given by Tug the Ships Safety Equipment Officer. Whilst this was occurring Ships Staff utilised this time to bend-on the fore staysail and main staysail following sail repairs conducted after the last voyage. At 1030 the anchor was weighed and Young Endeavour commenced the pilotage down to the south of Port Phillip Bay. During the day the Youth Crew were kept busy with deck safety and sail setting and furling drills. At 1530 in perfect sailing conditions, tacking stations were called and the Youth Crew successfully proved that they had hoisted in the past 24 hours of instruction by successfully completing their first set of tacks as a crew. To complete this drill I initiated a man overboard exercise (only using a lifebuoy) so that the Youth Crew could be given the experience of handing in all sail and recovering someone from the water. On successful completion of this exercise we motor sailed the final 7nm up to Capel Bay and anchored just to the north east of the Rye Jetty. Normally we would have proceeded out of Port Phillip Bay at this time but due to tidal windows I decided to remain at anchor until tomorrow morning and exit the Rip (entry to Port Phillip Bay) at slack water, which is at 0900. This evening we enjoyed a teak deck BBQ which was cooked by yours truly and now the Youth Crew have settled into their watches for the night. Tomorrow morning we will get underway by 0700 so that we can exit the Rip’ and commence our passage across the unpredictable Bass Strait.Until tomorrow, take care.Yours AyeCaptain Gav
