Day 2 – Climbing to New Heights!

Ahoy there new friends, welcome to the Captain’s Log for Day 2!

Day 2 dawned without a cloud in the sky and the promise of a beautiful tropical winter’s day ahead! Sail Master Chucky had us up bright and early at 0630 to get some breakfast and get ready for the day. First thing up on the program was going back to anchor at Fitzroy Island after a small adventure overnight. None of us complained about the chance to enjoy the warm rays on the deck while the Staffies brought us safely to anchor once more. Then it was time for our introduction to Morning Brief! At the Morning Brief each day we’ll find out the “Plan for the Day” with Chucky, a weather update and some information on the local area from Nav Trev, and all the saltiest nautical knowledge you could want from Watch Officer Charlotte.

All too soon it was time for lunch! Chef Ash and her wonderful volunteer Master Chefs Jesse, Jen and Charles put on a delicious spread of Hamburgers and Peri-Peri Chicken.

After lunch we headed back up on deck for a harness brief from resident Safety expert Theresa. We got familiar with the features of the harness and how to check our buddies to make sure everyone is wearing their harness correctly before we climb. It was then of course… First Climb Time! All our brave Youthies took on the challenge and attempted to lay aloft on the Foremast. Even those who thought they wouldn’t get higher than the deck stunned us all by courageously climbing to the Course (and some beyond)! It was a great afternoon seeing all our Youthies tackling their fears. And of course, the beautiful birds eye view of Fitzroy Island certainly didn’t hurt.

After Dinner was packed up and put away, it was time to get an introduction to Happy Hour! Sadly, this was not drinks on the deck at sunset, but the most important hour of the day where we clean the ship to help keep ourselves and our new shipmates healthy and happy.
With the cleaning done, we met Navigator Trev on deck for an Anchor Watch brief as tonight our Youthies will be keeping the ship safe whilst at anchor. Finally, Chucky gave us a treat with a short movie under the stars before we pipe-down for the night.

See you tomorrow! Captain Libby+
