Day 1 – Ahoy shipmates
Ahoy there shipmates, landlubbers and armchair sailors, 24 YC from all over the country arrived today at 1330 ready for an amazing adventure. After our welcome and introductions, we slipped and proceeded into the Derwent River and waited for our fellow tall ships to take part in the Australian Wooden Boat Festival’s closing parade of sail, the “Admiral’s Sail”.
Whilst the other tall ships unberthed, Youth Crew members were split into red, white and blue watches and their Watch Leaders took the opportunity to commence deck safety and line handling training, just in time for the Sailmaster to shout, “Youth Crew, set the squares!”.
We formed up in column astern of Windeward Bound, with Lady Nelson astern of us, then there was One and All, Soren Larsen, Duyfken, Julie Burgess, Rhona H, Kerrawyn, James Craig and other classic vessels. What a thrill it was ladies and gents to be a part of that spectacular flotilla. Then just as it had started, it was over and so Youth Crew handed-in sail and we proceeded to our anchorage in North West Bay, at the top of the D’Entrecasteaux Channel.
Enroute Youth Crew conducted ice breaker activities and ships tours. By the way, let me introduce our skilled and experienced staff crew for this voyage:
Sailmaster – Dion.
Navigator – Evan.
Assistant Navigator – Trevor.
Watch Officer – Chucky.
Assistant Watch Officer – Tomo.
Red Watch Leader – Ash.
White Watch Leader – Tug.
Blue Watch Leader – Christine.
Chef – Haydo.
Engineer – Josh.
Second Engineer – Shaun.
Once at anchor, a lovely dinner was served, then we had a chat about voyage principles and what to expect… Our collective advice was to challenge yourself, give everything a go and leave with no regrets.
The engineers then gave our youthies a tour of the engine room before Watch Leaders had a final chat with their sea-puppies, before turning-in for the night.
Intend remaining at anchor overnight, conducting first climbs in the morning and sailing after lunch.
Until tomorrows log then, be safe.

Thank you Tarvi, Kaeden and Matt for your narrative of today's events. Intentions are to remain at anchor in Hunters Bay, just off HMAS Penguin, home of the RAN Diving School, a place close to my heart, having spent many a day there under training as a young Officer! The plan is to weigh anchor and proceed to HMAS Waterhen, in Waverton, to pick up our Community Day Sailors from the Windgap Foundation and take them for a sail around the harbour for 3 hours. The Youth Crew will help us host our visitors and give them an experience of Young Endeavour. We will drop them back to Waverton and then proceed to anchor in the harbour where we will have a good view of the Bridge and the Opera House for the Youth Crew's last night onboard. Until tomorrow. Yours Aye, Captain Mike
