Day Ten – The penultimate day

Hiya folks, and welcome to the penultimate captains log for V08/16.

A nice and safe overnight anchorage at Tangalooma, ensured a very pleasant slumber for all, until the evil Taffy woke us all at 0630. He told us to ‘dote on the rorqual with tang and gloomy necks’! ‘Goodness me’, I thought, ‘He’s lost his mind!’. So I rolled over and continued riding rainbows with my unicorn friend, Jeff. Thankfully youthies did no such thing and off they went in the boat to snorkel the Tangalooma wrecks. These youthies have the right attitude – carpe diem baby. And they did see the fish of the day! Lots of them. lol.

At some stage Taffy resumed his senses and flashed up the barbie, to prepare a lovely bacon, egg and sausage brunch for our intrepid adventurers’ return. And it sure hit the spot. ‘Thanks Taffy’ they all cried in unison. After that and a thorough clean of the ship, we gathered for command day debrief, to tease out the good and not so good stuff. We all want to improve ourselves so we need to take a good hard look in the mirror every now and then, if you know what I mean 😉 Command day was successful, but as always, there were lessons learnt. As well – I was pleased to see – the importance of resilience and adaptability (among other important traits), was acknowledged.

Overall it was acknowledged to have been an awesome experience, to sail a vessel so far and achieve what they did, considering only 8 days of training. Well done you lot. I’m a proud little Captain, I am.

Then, after a brief pause, our salty sea dogs had one last rope race to see who the top dogs were. It turned out to be Blue, White then Red watch, and that’s the order in which the squares were harbour furled from the top down, so we look nice and pretty tomorrow. Back on deck in time for the rain to set in, our youthies got stuck into end of voyage debrief with their watch leaders and some other administrative requirements. We flashed up the barbie once again and cooked up a feast. Despite the rain, we chowed down under the awning and enjoyed the vibe. Great company, grouse tucker and some groovy tunes. There was even an impromptu dance circle afterwards. Good times.

The vibes were good but of course everyone was feeling a little melancholy, as tomorrow we will all have to say our farewells and carry on. Their end of voyage slideshow was point in fact. Everyone is looking forward to going home for sure, but also a little part of each of them want to stay and go again. Or maybe not.

Anyway, the youth crew is dwindling now, slowly finding their racks for their last sleep onboard this fair ship. I’m sure they are looking forward to seeing a lot of you at HMAS Moreton tomorrow, as am I. So until then, its back to rainbows and unicorns for me.

Yours Aye,

Captain Adam
