Day 5 – Leaving Whitsundays
Ahoy! Having remained at anchor in Nara Inlet, Hook Island overnight, the YC awoke to a fun, Early Morning Activity at 0630 followed by a yummy, BBQ breakie on deck. Thanks Nick, Peta and Jessica, great spread. It was a magnificent morning to be alive. Our National Anthem was sung with great gusto during Colours ceremony at 0800, which always stirs my emotions. Sandy’s plan for the day was then hatched, before Dion the Navigator spruiked his salty stats. Paige ‘let the cat out of the bag’ on the origins of the expression, ‘not enough room to swing a cat’.
Then it was time for our favourite part of the day – Happy Hour.
When the ship was shiny and pretty, Paige commenced ferrying our beloved YC ashore to investigate the Ngaro Cultural Site at the head on the inlet. The Ngaro people were the original inhabitants of the Whitsundays, more than 8000 years ago. The Ngaro used to move seasonally through the islands in search of food using simple bark canoes. The site contains a rock shelter with Ngaro art and other cultural deposits.
They made it back to the ship just in time for lunch. After a little lie down, we weighed anchor and departed the inlet. Shortly thereafter, I enthralled the YC with my ‘Sail Theory Extravaganza” or ‘How to sail a Tallship’ lesson. Then we ate dinner, set the topgallant and topsail square sails and slipped into sea watches overnight. The sun set (nil green flash) as we left the Whitsundays astern and shaped a course for Magnetic Island and into the inky night.

Thank you Tarvi, Kaeden and Matt for your narrative of today's events. Intentions are to remain at anchor in Hunters Bay, just off HMAS Penguin, home of the RAN Diving School, a place close to my heart, having spent many a day there under training as a young Officer! The plan is to weigh anchor and proceed to HMAS Waterhen, in Waverton, to pick up our Community Day Sailors from the Windgap Foundation and take them for a sail around the harbour for 3 hours. The Youth Crew will help us host our visitors and give them an experience of Young Endeavour. We will drop them back to Waverton and then proceed to anchor in the harbour where we will have a good view of the Bridge and the Opera House for the Youth Crew's last night onboard. Until tomorrow. Yours Aye, Captain Mike
