Day 3 – Hello Port Hacking…Beach, BBQ, Bucketing Rain!

Ahoy shipmates…Day 3 and still no wind! After a relatively comfortable night motor sailing (some youth crew may disagree), sunrise found us just to the south of Port Hacking (Cronulla). With a frustrating forecast of still no decent breeze for a couple of days, we decided to head to anchor off Bundeena, Port Hacking, arriving around 1000 this morning. We then filled the day with happy hour (a clean ship is a happy ship!), lunch, a trip ashore to Jibbon Beach, a downpour, impromptu waterfalls, a navigation brief, a teak deck barbeque, three way talks, where we get to learn a bit more about the youth crew as they assume someone else’s identity (temporarily),and an anchor watch brief. A pretty jam packed day….and a well earned nights rest at anchor. The good news is that now we are secure in calmer waters, the dreaded ‘green goblin’ (seasickness) has departed…until tomorrow maybe! Lots of sick crew on board as we spent our first day out in open waters. The crew began to start the cycle of watches, with some youthies getting caught out in wet weather. Although the storm may have seemed to have dampen our spirits, they still burned none the less. Land ahoy reverberated through the ship as the fog started to clear, and we could make out our first stop along this voyage – Port Hacking!Before heading to shore we reinforced our lessons on furling staysails, then the crew took us through some team building exercises. To the relief of those who are yet to grasp their sea legs, we deployed the seaboat to ferry the youthies to the land. Wherein we engaged in a variety of fun actives, including but not limited too: Frisbee, Dodgeball and Volleyball. An impromptu sand sculpture competition commenced, with all works outstanding, from a mermaid to an octopus. But we were inconclusive of a winner as it started to bucket down rain. The brilliant Emma (Navigator) delivered our first introduction to the extensive and critical art of nautical navigation. Which took us from the traditional maps and pelorus to the more modern radar. Our chef Adam provided with us a diverse BBQ which for many saw their first taste of kangaroo, crocodile and emu. Some were excited, some were apprehensive but all were fed. To round the day off, we completed an entertaining and informative activity called 3 way talks, and initiated our first anchor watches for the voyage, which some would find to be a relief from the usual 4 hour watches and particularly after an exhausting day.
