Day 5 – NSW North Coast
Ahoy there everyone happy Mother’s Day, Overnight Young Endeavour continued motor sailing with all fore and aft sails set, along the NSW north coast with a one metre swell and a 10 knot southerly that slowly veered to the west during the forenoon. After morning brief and happy hour continuation of deck and sail work was consolidated. With the wind continuing to veer to the north the three square sails (top gallant, top sail and course) were set and suddenly we were achieving 10 knots solely under sail with the assistance of the East Australian Current on a magnificent sunny day.Our first whale of the season was spotted along with the continual presence of dolphins. After lunch round four of rope races was conducted before the ship was rigged for an hour’s silent running. During this period all machinery is shut down and only the sound of the wind in the rigging and the caress of the ocean can be heard as a relaxed atmosphere pervades the ship, a time for reflection. During the afternoon the wind abated significantly requiring the majority the sails to be furled and brailed as we continued motor sailing south. Matt the sail master injected a quiz afternoon to complete the afternoon’s activity prior to dinner. The Youth Crew have now settled into sea watches overnight as we remain at sea overnight making ground towards our first anchorage tomorrow in Nelsons Bay, Port Stephens. Until tomorrow evening.Yours AyeCaptain Damien

Thank you Tarvi, Kaeden and Matt for your narrative of today's events. Intentions are to remain at anchor in Hunters Bay, just off HMAS Penguin, home of the RAN Diving School, a place close to my heart, having spent many a day there under training as a young Officer! The plan is to weigh anchor and proceed to HMAS Waterhen, in Waverton, to pick up our Community Day Sailors from the Windgap Foundation and take them for a sail around the harbour for 3 hours. The Youth Crew will help us host our visitors and give them an experience of Young Endeavour. We will drop them back to Waverton and then proceed to anchor in the harbour where we will have a good view of the Bridge and the Opera House for the Youth Crew's last night onboard. Until tomorrow. Yours Aye, Captain Mike
