YOUNG ENDEAVOUR II TAKES SHAPE AS HULL IS ROLLED OVER IN MAJOR MILESTONE

The construction of the next-generation Sail Training Ship Young Endeavour II (STS YE-II) has reached a major milestone with the successful roll-over of its hull at Birdon shipyard in Port Macquarie on 17 December 2024.

This crucial milestone shifts the build from laying foundations to full-scale assembly, marking the beginning of outfitting – where the ship truly starts to take form. It’s a major leap towards bringing the future of youth sail training to life.

The hull section, weighing an incredible 57 tonnes, is key to ensuring structural integrity and precision in the vessel’s alignment. While much work remains, this moment signals strong progress in delivering the new sail training ship.

Birdon has a team of approximately 43 people supporting the build of YE-II including production, quality, engineering, Integrated Logistics Support, commercial and project management.  Navy Ship building and Sustainment Group (NSSG) has up to 14 people supporting the acquisition elements of the vessel.

The Young Endeavour Youth Schemes Project Manager and Acting Deputy Director, Commander (CMDR) Gavin Dawe highlighted the significance of this milestone and the future of the ship.

“The new ship is being built to replace the current vessel, which has delivered life-changing experiences to young Australians since 1988,” said CMDR Dawe.

“The new design will enhance safety, accessibility and sustainability while maintaining the spirit of the original ship.”

Project Director Chris Horne outlined the exciting road ahead.

“After an initial design period and final detailing with the support of Dykstra Naval Architects, Birdon has been manufacturing this below water line section of the hull since December 2023,” said Mr Horner.

“As Birdon continues to finish off the steel hull, upcoming milestones include production of the masts, booms and gaffs, outfitting and all the electrical work with the next big milestones being stepping the masts and then launch of the vessel into the water later this year.”

With momentum building, Young Endeavour II is one step closer to setting sail and shaping the next generation of young adventurers.
