Voyage 11/13 Day 7 – Sea to Broken Bay
Ahoy there Shipmates,Overnight the ship continued motor-sailing towards Broken Bay, encountering some showers, high winds and big swells along the way. In these challenging conditions the watches undertook the exercise known as the BEAREX in which they are given a task, usually a sail to set and furl that they have not seen. It is a leadership exercise in which watch members have the opportunity to step-up and take charge of the activity if they have the confidence and cooperation of their fellow watch members. It also gives watch members the opportunity to see who has the practical sailing knowledge and who has the leadership ability, which enables them to make an informed decision in the Command Day elections. At 0700 I commenced Captain’s Setting and Furling Drills, which enable me to evaluate each watch’s ability to safely set and furl sails, without staff present. This is a requirement before progressing to Command Day. All three watches passed the assessment. We then headed into Broken Bay upstream the Hawkesbury River, anchoring at Cottage Point. After lunch we put the Youthies ashore to the local marina café to have a break off the Ship and the opportunity for a coffee or hot chocolate and a slice of cheesecake. Everyone returned onboard by 1530 so the crew could do their final climb before Command Day. Afterwards I briefed the youth crew on the aims and requirements of Command Day, which is planned to occur between 1300 tomorrow (Thu 27) and 1300 Fri 28. They were then given an hour to conduct their Command Day elections, the results of which are as follows:Captain: Andrew DuverSail Master: Lachlan McAlisterNavigator: Mallorie OwensWatch Leaders: Matthew Kelly, Alexandra Blackburn & Nicole HarrisWatch Officers: Jessica Healy, Brittany Larkin & Connie RossChefs: Thomas Fitzsimmons, Adam Hendriks & Georgia SmithCongratulations to all members of the Youth Crew for what they have achieved in the Voyage so far and to those successful office holders for Command Day.After the ‘teak deck BBQ’ dinner we screened the film ‘Around Cape Horn’, which details the adventures of Captain Irving Johnson when he sailed as an ordinary seaman through storms around Cape Horn onboard the massive bark ‘Peking’.The intention is to remain in our current anchorage overnight and conduct the handover of the Ship to the Youth Crew at 1300 tomorrow. That will begin the adventure and challenge that is Command Day in Young Endeavour. After what has been an exhausting 48 hours since sailing from Coffs I am sure the whole crew will sleep well tonight in our sheltered anchorage.Until tomorrow evening when we will also hear from Youth Captain Andrew.Yours AyeCaptain Mike P.S. Have added photos to days 5, 6 & 7. Will be able to be viewed pm tomorrow.    “Â

Thank you Tarvi, Kaeden and Matt for your narrative of today's events. Intentions are to remain at anchor in Hunters Bay, just off HMAS Penguin, home of the RAN Diving School, a place close to my heart, having spent many a day there under training as a young Officer! The plan is to weigh anchor and proceed to HMAS Waterhen, in Waverton, to pick up our Community Day Sailors from the Windgap Foundation and take them for a sail around the harbour for 3 hours. The Youth Crew will help us host our visitors and give them an experience of Young Endeavour. We will drop them back to Waverton and then proceed to anchor in the harbour where we will have a good view of the Bridge and the Opera House for the Youth Crew's last night onboard. Until tomorrow. Yours Aye, Captain Mike
