Day 7 – V07/25, Gladstone to Cairns

Today, in the vast and spectacular sea, we have made so many incredible memories, such as setting sails, watching the dolphins and climbing the rigging. Every single moment of this voyage has been filled with energy and adventure, and a bit of courage to try new things and seize opportunities. It’s been quite a day!

This morning, we completed the Captains’ Challenge, where all the Youthies were given the task to set all the sails with minimal staffie involvement. We worked hard, heaving in and checking away. 2, 6 heave was the call heard booming across the deck as we worked together to get this beautiful ship sailing. After the watches were tested in Captain’s Setting  & furling, we got ready for Demo Tacks. The call for tacking stations went out, and as lines were faked out, youthies set about moving around the deck in well-practised precision. Once we were ready, Captain Tomo told us all about how to tack the ship in preparation for our Command Day tomorrow. Once our final tack was finished, we went to anchor near Dunk Island to shelter from the weather and give everyone a good night’s sleep.

Elections were on in full as we cast our votes for the new Youth Crew Captain, Sail Master, Navigator, Watch Officer, Chefs and Watch Leaders. Congratulations to our newly elected team:

In the evening, we splayed out on the fenders and watched a documentary about the early sailor pioneers that came before us. The stars were bright, the youthies were packed in tight, and whilst there wasn’t a cloud in sight, there was popcorn for all. We came away from the movie ‘Around Cape Horn’ feeling proud of each other and ready for the adventure ahead tomorrow.
