Day 5 – V07/25, Gladstone to Cairns

Day 5 started off with the youthies finishing off their anchor watches at 0630, with the rest of the youth crew being woken up to ‘Walking on Sunshine.’ After morning laps on the deck, we headed down for a breakfast made by the one and only Kingy. Today’s activities included going ashore to Hook Island, where we snorkelled, swam and played games.
When we returned to the ship we showered, had lunch and completed Happy Hour. After a quick Sao Break, we headed up to midships to participate in Rope Races. Blueys and Whiteys are currently tying for first, with the Reddies nipping at their heels in third. In the afternoon we received briefings from Karsen and Tomo about Rules of the Road and a bit of Sail Theory before heading down to dinner.
Taking over from the Whiteys at 1800, the Blueys began to fake out lines for the topgallant and topsail with 2 youthies and our Watch Leader heading to the topgallant to cast loose gaskets. Very big climb to the top of the foremast!
The watch then encountered big winds of up to 40knots with the port side of the ship having a very large heel sending water rushing onto the main deck. Youthies were very startled and got their first experience of ‘Big Seas’. Staffies quickly flooded the deck assisting the 6 Blueys to furl in the jib and the main sail.
P.S – Don’t worry – we absolutely loved it!
Keira – Having the best time, haven’t vomited yet, missing you all, love you!
Jaz – Enjoying every moment, I love and miss you all x
