Day 2 – V07/25, Gladstone to Cairns

Sail Master Chucky woke the intrepid crew of STS Young Endeavour at 0630 with a few laps of the Upper Decks and some quick games at Midships. After an eventful Day 1, there was some tired Youthies wiping their eyes of sleep! Chef Kingy cooked up an awesome morning breakfast, however, and soon there was nothing but full bellies and happy smiling faces!

Straight off the bat we held the Youth Crew’s first Morning Brief, where the Youth Crew here from a number of the crew and get told what the plan for the day will be. Included in this collection of Staff Crew speakers was the Nav to brief the weather and tell us a little about the surrounding area, ‘Salty’ herself to tell us about the ‘soul of the sea’ and myself to help the Youth Crew reflect on what they achieve every day. From there it was straight onto Happy Hour, where we get the Youth Crew to clean the ship from stem to stern. A clean ship is truly a happy ship!

It was then time to say goodbye to Gladstone as we cast off our berthing lines and headed out to open sea. We were off to Cairns!! The Youth Crew were then taken under the wing of their Watch Leaders and got to work learning all about the sails onboard. There were many calls of “2, 6, Heave” as the Youthies practiced their setting and furling drills.

After dinner it was time to settle in for watches overnight. There was a real sense of excitement and anticipation as the Youthies came up for their very first night watch. Soon they were learning how to steer the ship, run the rounds routine and get some exposure to what happens back at the bridge.

They Youth Crew are going to learn more and more each day, and as we continue up the QLD coast to Cairns I can tell you that the sunsets are truly spectacular!
