Day 1 – New shipmates ahoy!

Ahoy there shipmates, landlubbers and armchair sailors, Youth Crew of Voyage 07A/24 embarked today at 1500 alongside Newcastle, NSW, with a very large group of family and friends, who came to inspect the ship and the staff crew, and to farewell their loved ones for the next 11 days.

I welcomed Youth Crew and guests onboard and introduced my trusty and experienced staff crew, who are: Sail Master – Charlotte. Assistant Sail Master – Leups. Navigator – Matt. Watch Officer – Karsen. White Watch Leader – Bec. Red Watch Leader – TJ. Blue Watch Leaders – Chris and Sean. Chef – Steve and Engineers – Dan and Simon. We then farewelled family and friends and Watch Leaders began the program with ice breakers and ships’ tours. Youth Crew were then mustered at midships, where we spoke to them about their responsibilities and a few guidelines to ensure communal harmony and unconditional positive regard for all. We are an intergalactic good vibes only zone, after all. Next, a lovely dinner was served, then our resident shipborne lifesaving and survival expert, Bec, gave Youth Crew a thorough climbing safety brief before they laid aloft for their first climbs of the foremast. They climbed in watches and when they weren’t aloft, they began their seamanship training, consisting of line handling and deck safety. They also negotiated their Full Value Contracts for the voyage, to ensure they get the most out of their time onboard. Once everyone was back on deck, having successfully made their first climbs, our young sea-puppies turned in for a well-deserved sleep. Our intention is to remain alongside overnight, slipping and proceeding to sea at 0830.

The adventure has begun… I wonder where we’ll be this time tomorrow night?
