Day 8 – Command Day
Day 8, what a day!
It began with trees of green, red roses too, with the youth crew ready and raring to steam into Command Day, even if there were a few nerves hanging around. White Watch raised the flag during our final morning brief by the staff team, followed by a relatively swift happy hour. The newly elected command crew had a chance to ask final questions from their staff counterparts, and then, the moment we’ve all been preparing for: the handing over of the keys. The youth are now officially in charge of the ship.
We began with group activities to team build within our new watches (dubbed Green, Pink and Gold) and kicked straight on to our to-do list, a list of 26 tasks we’ve been set to achieve during our 24 hours. We solved some puzzles, made a rope hammock and sent a party to the beach in a row boat, among other things.
And then – Covid.
After some symptoms popped in their unwelcome heads, everyone on board took a RAT test. Sadly 3 of our number tested positive and a plan B had to be made. Each of the 3 are now safe and sound in in Sydney, with plans to get everyone home to a more comfortable isolation shortly. The remainder of the crew will take another test tomorrow, so fingers crossed all is clear.
Lifting morale became our next important task, so after the youth had an opportunity to contact their families, we retreated from the rain to test our knowledge in trivia night (well done Bruises on your victory!).
Anchor watches are set for the night, and only time will tell what the morning will bring. We can assure you all are well and looking forward to a good night’s rest.
Till tomorrow!

Thank you Tarvi, Kaeden and Matt for your narrative of today's events. Intentions are to remain at anchor in Hunters Bay, just off HMAS Penguin, home of the RAN Diving School, a place close to my heart, having spent many a day there under training as a young Officer! The plan is to weigh anchor and proceed to HMAS Waterhen, in Waverton, to pick up our Community Day Sailors from the Windgap Foundation and take them for a sail around the harbour for 3 hours. The Youth Crew will help us host our visitors and give them an experience of Young Endeavour. We will drop them back to Waverton and then proceed to anchor in the harbour where we will have a good view of the Bridge and the Opera House for the Youth Crew's last night onboard. Until tomorrow. Yours Aye, Captain Mike
