Day 4 – Dreaming of Sealers Cove

Ahoy there dear readers, currently to the south of the Bass Strait oil fields and steaming ENE towards Gabo Island and beyond. Great conditions for not getting sea sick but not necessarily so for sailing. Anyway, our program continues with Navigation and collision avoidance training and climbing consolidation overnight.

Please enjoy tonight’s  Log by Alex and Luke.

Thankfully, day four was indeed a glorious day filled with sunshine, smooth waters and many happy sailors. We awoke at 0630 in Sealers Cove to John Lennon’s ‘Imagine’. Everyone went onto the deck, ready for Dion’s zenergizing morning activity. We watched a golden sunrise peek over the horizon and learnt about crepuscular rays, as we witnessed them above the ocean.

Captain Charlie inspired the Youthies with his two quotes; ‘If your dreams don’t scare you, they’re not big enough’ and a James Dean quote ‘Dream as if you’ll live forever and live as if you’ll die today’.

Chuck taught us about basic boating rules and how to maintain safe navigation by the use of signs, shapes and symbols. We also learnt the important lessons of avoiding collisions at sea and right-of-way rules between Powered Driven Vessels and Sailing Vessels.

All Youthies had the privilege to lay aloft the three tiered Yard Arms in Sealers Cove. Many of the Youthies were pushed outside their comfort zone during this activity as each felt precariously perched on top of the Yard Arms. Even though we were secured and safe, the height, rocking and unfamiliar feeling of sitting on a Yard Arm was a psychological challenge and it was a mark of bravery as every single person gave it a go. Huzzah!

We then raised anchors as we embarked on our journey towards Jervis Bay. We had rope racing and a lesson about Main Sails followed by ice-cream and free time.

As the sunset, the dolphins came out to play and they raced alongside the Young Endeavour.

Lastly but definitely not least, there were no green faces and everyone had a great day, excited for what tomorrow brings.
