Day 5 – Fly past Coffs Harbour on our way North

Tonight’s Captains Log is coming to you from Lill and Hayden currently on the First Watch:
The day began with blue skies, soft winds, and the sounds of waking youth crew after a night of slightly less disruptions. Up on deck, the Engineer Dan stepped in as the ship’s chef to help cook up a storm with his fried eggs, bacon and most importantly, the homemade bread rolls. The day swung into action quickly after the anchor was weighed and we set sail for the North. We did a fly by Coffs Harbour, but the conditions weren’t good to send a sea boat in, so we continued our adventure.
Chucky taught us some Rules of the Road which is pretty much how to not crash ships at sea. Very informative and likely useful information… Followed by our trusty Sailmaster Karsen gave us a short and sharp square sail brief made all the more entertaining by her interpretive dance to explain the movement of these magestic sails.
We then set the foresail, mainsail, and topsail, cut off our engines for a little while and were taken away by the wind for the first time on our voyage albeit at a slow 3.5 knots. This wasn’t going to get us to Brissy for our scheduled time, so we packed up the topsail and pushed our props forward again at a much speedier pace.
After the work on deck, we headed down to say G’day to Nathan for another incredible dinner which included some rice, vegetables, curried sausages and chicken and the ever popular youthie favourite – roasted mini spud potatoes. Duff (dessert) was a mango tasty treat!
Now we’re moving into our night watches to keep the ship in check so others can get there very much needed rest before our next big day ahead.
Good night!
