Day 2 – Leave Sydney Harbour – Turn Left!

A beautiful start to the morning with the ship at anchor in Athol Bay, Sydney. No lion roars unfortunately but a beautiful, calm if a bit brisk start to the day with wakey wakey at 0630 and an early morning walk around the deck to get things moving. Our chefo, Nathan, cooked an incredible spread of fresh bread rolls, bacon and eggs and some delicious pastries, which warmed us up for our Morning Brief.
The morning briefs onboard Young Endeavour aren’t your standard sort of Naval Both-Watches start to the day. With today’s being our first we introduced our key players; the Sail Master Karsen, Our Salty Sea Dog Chuckie, Navigator MattyJ and then a few words from myself as the Captain. Its an opportunity to reflect on our previous 24 hours, hear about the day’s program and learn some wisdom about where we are, where we are going but the highlight is the sharing of all things nautical with salty tales from the high seas.
Once we had a rough plan for the day we settled into a routine with some briefs where we talk about communal living, water usage, cleanliness, and this being a universal good vibe zone. This helps prepare us for the challenges we are about to undertake. I like to present a more in-depth look at what the Youth Development Program is and how to get the most out of it. Before we knew it the galley was firing with tasty treats and lunch was served.
The afternoon was spent learning our way around the deck with the different lines, sails and safety protocols. After an indepth Safety brief and a weighing anchor brief we weighed anchor and did some setting and furling drills with our fore and aft sails in the northern side of the harbour. This was a lot of fun with the 10kn Southery wind giving us something to work with. Once the Watchleaders were happy with the crew’s progress we ate dinner whilst exiting Harbour. Who knows where our next anchorage will be. There are some beautiful bays between here at Brisbane plan is to go and explore a few!
Our path will keep us close to the coast to stay out of the EAC so if you’re on the Central Coast or anywhere between here and Coffs Harbour – keep an eye out because we are coming! You can follow us on Marine Traffic (lookup Young Endeavour) or on the Youngendeavour.gov.au website.
It’s great to be back at sea working with 24 inspirational Young Australians as they find their feet and get involved. This is going to be a fun voyage.
