Day 3 – The art of Tall Ship handling

Welcome to the Captain’s Log for Day three of Voyage 05/24.

Ahoy dear readers, Day three of our voyage found the ship to the east of Bondi Beach, having spent the night at sea with Youth Crew conducting Watch on Deck duties, climbing and sail handling overnight. At 0800 we entered the Harbour and proceeded to Rushcutters Bay for a boat transfer of a few guests to embark for a wee sail. Youth Crew then laid aloft to cast loose gaskets on the square sails in preparation for setting. Back out into the Tasman Sea we went and sails were set – including all three squares – and after a couple of hours enjoying the breeze and having a bite to eat, we returned to the harbour and anchored in Athol Bay, once again.

It has been great to dust off some cobwebs and loose the squares under a lovely breeze, as it has been quite a few moons since a Youth Crew has done so. And I must say, dear readers, these Youth Crew are well trained up (kudos to their Watch Leaders) and are certainly quite confident and competent in the age-old art of Tall Ship sail handling (kudos to them!). But I digress…

Our guests returned to their offices and computers (much to their displeasure), and then Youth Crew prepared to make landfall themselves. So the seaboat was loaded up and Youthies were ferried ashore for a lovely frolic at the spectacular and secluded Athol Beach.

On their return dinner was served, and once digested, climbing harnesses were donned and up up they went into the rigging, once again. This time to sea furl the square sails and enjoy an amazing city sunset from the yards. Ah the good old time, youth and sea… as the poem goes.
