Day 6 – Pancake Stacks and Demo Tacks
Ahoy There, I like the cut of your Jib! Tonight’s log is coming to you from Nivy of Blue Watch and Theo from the White Watch.
After yesterday’s sailing and tacking drills, we enjoyed a well-deserved restful night at anchor. We started our morning with a game of snake on the deck which got us lively and energetic for the busy day ahead. We were particularly grateful for the night sheltered within Jervis Bay when Navigator Charlie told us about the 3m Seas and 30kt winds wailing outside Point Perpendicular and the calm confines of the bay.
After pancakes for breakfast and the happiest hour of the day, we continued exploring charting and navigation with Captain Leups. A few heads were scratched, but many minds were tickled, and we all know without a doubt we will be able to chart a course for command day!
Shortly after, Engineer Dan lead us in yet another round of Rope Races, this time testing our knowledge on the ship’s three square sails. It was a close non-competitive competition, and it’s anyone’s guess who’s ahead at this point, we’re not even sure if Dan knows! This followed quickly into a lunch of fish and chips or sausages to fill our bellies before we weighed anchor and set sail in the afternoon.
The highlight of the afternoon’s sailing was the demonstration tacks. Us Youthies took shifts on the bridge to watch the action of the ship at tack, and bring our knowledge of sail theory quickly into practice. It was great to see the roles of all the watches and crew on the bridge as the magic started to happen and our bow turned into the wind.
Once again, a big thank you goes to Steve and the youthie masterchefs who prepared and served a delicious dinner whilst we were hard at work on the ropes above.
Tonight we are back on sea watches, so we are writing this early to get some rest before we awake in the night to complete the mysterious watch exercise known as BearEx. I’m sure tomorrow’s loggers will be able to tell you all about it!
Sending love to all the families and friends of the youth crew onboard.
Signing out from Theo and Nivy +
