The Bitter End

Good Evening Shipmates, Well the voyage is nearing the end and what a ripper voyage it has been. The YC did a great job at Command Day and we were all then treated to a really fun ‘Sods Opera’ yesterday evening. There is some real talent in this crew. We woke this morning to another stunning Queensland day and what a day it was. After our normal morning routine we were soon all ferried ashore to the Tangalooma Resort where we had some fun playing beach sports and then just hanging around ‘chillaxing’. Back onboard for lunch and soon we were underway again but unfortunately the wind gods were not talking to the sun gods because we had plenty of the latter and none of the former. We motored across Moreton Bay and whilst doing so the YC had their ‘end of voyage talks’ where they are invited to think about their voyage and what they have taken away from the experience. Then followed the final set of rope races and right to the bitter end the YE experience just keeps giving as we had a humpback whale and her calf surface right next to us as we approached our overnight anchorage at Mud Island. Very cool indeed. This evening it was movie and slide night as the YC watched the exploits of Captain Irving Johnston and his adventures around the Horn. This was followed by a slide show put together by the YC which was a lot of fun and I thought I had got away with it, but my birthday was then announced with the arrival of a cake. I couldn’t think of a nicer way to spend it. Tomorrow morning we will weigh anchor at 0700 and motor the few miles up the Brisbane River to arrive at Bulimba at 1000 completing this voyage. We have spent 144 hours covering 653.5 nm under sail alone, have used every sail in inventory and had zero to 30+ knots of wind to deal with. It has been awesome fun with an awesome crew.
