SYDNEY TO HOBART YACHT RACE 2017 RETURNEE VOYAGE

Hello Shipmates,Welcome to Day 5 of the voyage. We had a nice relaxing night at anchor in Sandy Bay, Hobart. The winds stayed light overnight but started to freshen from 0700. By 0900 the gusts were above 25 kn and the Ship had moved beyond the edge of its swinging circle. Accordingly it was decided to veer another shackle of anchor cable to ensure we did not drag anchor any further.Sail Master Adam woke everyone for an early morning activity on deck in the light Hobart drizzle. After a continental breakfast the Morning Brief was held. As usual Adam gave us the plan for the day, followed by Navigator Kyle, who gave us some statistics on distances and average speeds achieved during the passage from Sydney. We then were privileged to have a stand-in Salty from the Returnee Crew, Stuart, ably assisted by Grace, Annie and John, who explained, through a skit, the origin of the expression ‘Dutch Courage.’ Then I gave my quote of the day on Loyalty from General Charles Krulack USMC and the crew then launched into ‘Happy Hour’.The next activity before lunch was to Harbour Furl the square sails. That proved challenging in the blustery conditions, but the Returnees did a fabulous job. Boat runs ashore to Salamanca, to take advantage of the famous weekly markets and the chance to see all the Sydney to Hobart Race participant yachts, started as soon as the first people had cycled through lunch.Once the last boat load of crew members was back onboard we kicked-off a BBQ dinner on the upper deck. We had a very pleasant last dinner together as a crew soaking in the evening sights of Sandy Bay. After dinner we held a Ship’s Operatic Department (SOD’s ) Opera, at which the Staffies and each of the watches performed either a skit, song or some form of entertainment for the rest of the crew. It was obvious that some fine efforts had gone into the preparation for the evening’s acts, all apart from the Staffies,’ which was at the usual ‘S***house Productions’ standard.Until tomorrow,Yours AyeCaptain Mike
