Standby to Tack Ship
Situation at 20:00- After yeaterday’s excitement and changes to the plan, today seems almost boring by comparision. Overnight the Watches conducted their major team building exercise and there were many valuable lessons learned by all hands. This morning just after 08:00, Chef Karen and the Youth Crew member who had banged her head returned onboard with aclean bill of health. The precautionary visit to the Doctor confirmed that she had not suffered any ill effects from her argument with theteak deck and she was quickly back with her Watch, fully involved in the program. The Staff Crew of YOUNG ENDEAVOUR take our duty of carefor the Youth Crew very seriously and will always seek medical assistance if in any doubt as to the health of anyone onboard. With the Youth Crew once more complete, we weighed anchor and continued on our way South to Sydney. The wind had eased to 25 knots but there was still a 3-4 metre swell running which made for a fun ride. After lunch, Executive Officer Paul explained the intricacies of sailing the Ship to and from an anchorage. This lecture wasdesigned to prepare the Youth Crew for command day.Because the wind is still in our faces, we were forced to tack several times during the day. There will likely be the need to tack several times overnight so the Youth Crew will be experts at tacking by the time the voyage is over.YOUNG ENDEAVOUR Fact File: The Ship’s namesake, HM Bark ENDEAVOUR,was purchased into the Royal Navy in March 1768 for the price of 2,307 pounds, 5 shillings and 6 pence. The Admiralty invested afurther 2500 pounds fitting her out. At 33 meters in length, she was 11 meters shorter than YOUNG ENDEAVOUR.YOUNG ENDEAVOUR Glossary: Overhaul – To haul the parts of a purchase through the blocks to stretch it out. Close Hauled – sailing as close to the wind as possible.Thought of the day: This above all: to thine own self be true. And it must follow, like the night the day thou canst not be false to any man. Thank you Tarvi, Kaeden and Matt for your narrative of today's events. Intentions are to remain at anchor in Hunters Bay, just off HMAS Penguin, home of the RAN Diving School, a place close to my heart, having spent many a day there under training as a young Officer! The plan is to weigh anchor and proceed to HMAS Waterhen, in Waverton, to pick up our Community Day Sailors from the Windgap Foundation and take them for a sail around the harbour for 3 hours. The Youth Crew will help us host our visitors and give them an experience of Young Endeavour. We will drop them back to Waverton and then proceed to anchor in the harbour where we will have a good view of the Bridge and the Opera House for the Youth Crew's last night onboard. Until tomorrow. Yours Aye, Captain Mike
