Shake A Leg

Ahoy there Shipmates,We had slightly annoying night at sea with a beam swell tossing the Ship around as we progressed our passage to Jervis Bay (JB). We motor-sailed some of the night and then came off engines once we had made good ground, but unfortunately the light breeze wasn’t strong enough to smooth out our ride. Overnight the all of the watches undertook the ‘Bearex’ leadership activity which entailed them taking charge of setting and furling a sail they had not seen before with only access to a set of written instructions. The aim of the exercise was to give potential leaders the opportunity to step-up and take control.Morning Brief today included another visit from ‘Salty’ who explained the nautical origin of the expression ‘shake a leg’ and then the Youthies launched into Happy Hour while the Staffies brought the Ship to anchor off Huskisson. After another of Marcus’ spectacular lunches we launched the Sea Boat and put the crew ashore for a leg-stretch followed by the opportunity for a fancy coffee and a slice of cheesecake. When we entered JB this morning I noticed one of the Navy’s Coastal Mine Hunters was working in the bay. Shortly after arriving I got a call from the Captain, who is a good friend, inviting me over to his Ship to join him for lunch. I accepted his kind invitation, leaving the running of Young Endeavour and the program in the capable hands of Sail Master Evan for an hour.Once everyone had returned onboard we weighed anchor and proceeded into the bay to conduct ‘Rotational Tacks’. We decided to do this today rather than tomorrow morning because the wind conditions were so good. We experienced 20 knot northerlies, the strongest wind we have encountered on the voyage so far. Rotationals is another activity that prepares the youthies for Command Day. We rotated the three watches through the other watch positions while we tacked the Ship. This is done to enable them to experience what the other watches’ duties entail at tacking stations. We anchored off Montagu Point in the NE corner of JB at 1730, by which time Chef Marcus and Engineer Horto had the BBQ well underway. We then enjoyed a delightful dinner on deck, chatting about the events of the day and admiring the fabulous JB sunset vista. After dinner the youthies played a couple of games on deck, orchestrated by Karly and Evan. This was followed by the screening of the movie we regularly show during voyages entitled ‘Around Cape Horn’, which details the adventures of Captain Irving Johnson when he sailed as an ordinary seaman through storms around Cape Horn onboard the massive bark, the ‘Peking’. It was shot by him in the 1920s and then compiled and narrated by him in the 1990s.It is my intention to remain here at anchor overnight.Until tomorrow evening. Yours ayeCaptain Mike
