Rain,rain go away

Day Five Good evening Shipmates, This morning we woke to a bleak and dismal day. The wind had eased a little but replaced with steady rain. After ‘Happy Hour’ I gave a lecture on sail theory and then it was up on deck to prepare to sail from the anchorage. Youth Crew lay aloft to cast loose the gaskets on the topsail and in fairly short order we were underway reaching out of Upstart Bay. Rotational tacks were then conducted where each watch was given the opportunity to see what the others did. Soon we were clear of the lee of Cape Upstart and we were back in familiar territory smashing our way to windward in fresh conditions. As the day wore on the wind freshened to 25-30 kts and the rain never ceased; all in all, quite miserable sailing conditions. To their credit, this Youth Crew have maintained their sense of humour and continue to display a very positive attitude. This evening, each watch will be conducting a leadership activity known as the ‘Bear’ exercise. Given the conditions I think this will be a real test. The plan for tomorrow is to anchor in Cid Harbour where the YC will hopefully get an opportunity to get ashore. Rain is forecast for at least the next 48 hours. So much for beautiful one day and perfect the next! STOP PRESS: As I was downloading this blog last night I was moemtarily distracted as the ship was hit by a series of squalls with wind gusts of over 50 kts experienced.  We had to wear ship in the 40 kt plus winds and the Youth crew did very well. Captain GunnaCarpe\’ diem
