YOUTH CREW KIT LIST

Below is a detailed list of recommended and optional items to pack in your kit bag for your voyage.

RECOMMENDED ITEMS DETAILS
Kit Bag, Sailing Gloves and Crew Shirt
Sent to you by the Young Endeavour Youth Scheme. Please wear your Crew Shirt when joining/leaving the ship. Use your kit bag to pack all clothing and other items that you will be bringing on board. Please do not pack more than your kit bag can carry.
Sleeping Bag and Pillow Case and a single fitted or flat sheet
An inner sheet for your sleeping bag on summer nights is recommended. You don't have to pack your sleeping bag inside the kit bag as it can be attached to the straps underneath the kit bag itself.
Sleeping Attire / PJs
You will be living with between 5 & 11 other Youth Crew of the same gender in your cabin. You may also be called onto deck at short notice during the night.
Underwear and Socks
Sufficient for the voyage (a pair of thick woollen socks is recommended for cold nights). There are hand washing facilities on board (i.e. bucket and soap).
Long Pants - tracksuit or cargo type pants (2)
Jeans are not recommended as they are difficult to dry.
Shorts (2)
On northern voyages (north of Brisbane), you may wish to swap a pair of long pants for extra shorts. On southern voyages (south of Sydney) you may wish to swap some T-shirts/shorts for extra long pants/jumpers.
Shirts/T-shirts/Tops (4-5)
Long sleeved and collared shirts are recommended for sun protection. No offensive logos or graphics.
Warm jumper (e.g. fleece, wool)
Think layers. It can get quite cold and windy at night. A thermal top is recommended, especially in winter.
Toiletries
Sufficient for 10 days, including sunscreen SPF30+, lip balm, soap, hairbrush, toothbrush and toothpaste, shaving gear, sanitary protection, etc. Some sunscreen is provided on board.
Swimmers/Board shorts (and sun protection)
There may be an opportunity to swim in the sea at the Captain's discretion depending on weather and conditions.
Trainers or Deck Shoes (2 pairs - at least one pair must be enclosed footwear)
Test your shoes on a smooth wet surface for grip. Thongs/slides are not allowed on deck but 'sports sandals' or enclosed sandals are okay. You may go ashore via the ship's boat or be working on deck in wet weather so bring protective footwear that you don't mind getting wet.
Bathroom footwear
A pair of thongs or sandals for use in bathroom showers.
Hat and Sunglasses
Essential for sun protection, with strap/cord to prevent loss. Please note there may not be hats or sunglasses available once you arrive and sunburn is a real risk. Some sunscreen is provided on board (see Toiletries).
Water Bottle (recommend at least 750ml capacity)
To keep you hydrated through the day. Please note, there may not be water bottles available at the port. Remaining hydrated is essential to help alleviate sea sickness and fatigue.
Spray Jacket
A light spray jacket or windproof jacket.
Watch
A water-resistant wristwatch is preferable. This will help you keep track of time during the program. For safety reasons, metal clasp watches are not permitted to be worn. Apple Watches with cellular connectivity are not permitted during the voyage.
OPTIONAL RECOMMENDED ITEMS DETAILS
Camera and memory /film
A compact camera is strongly recommended. There are power points on board for charging. You must attach cameras to your harness with a lanyard when climbing aloft. If the camera is not a compact model, you will not be able to climb with it. Neither STS Young Endeavour nor the Young Endeavour Youth Scheme will take any responsibility for loss or damage. Laptops/tablets may be brought on board however use will be limited as they detract from the objectives of the voyage. Neither STS Young Endeavour nor the Young Endeavour Youth Scheme will accept responsibility for loss or damage.
Small Torch
Preferably one that can be attached to a lanyard.
Money
Please ensure you have enough money to get to and from the ship from your point of arrival/departure in the town where you are joining or leaving your voyage. During a voyage you may go ashore (at the discretion of the Captain) where you may wish to make purchases or call home. Please note all meals are provided during your voyage. As most of your time is spent at sea, we recommend you bring no more than $50.00 in cash and/ or an ATM card to use in towns. A safe is available on board for valuables. Neither STS Young Endeavour nor the Young Endeavour Youth Scheme will accept responsibility for valuables that are not stored in the ship's safe.
Musical Instruments
If you have a compact and durable musical instrument, you may wish to bring it to use while you are off watch. Neither STS Young Endeavour nor the Young Endeavour Youth Scheme will accept responsibility for loss or damage.
Personal/portable music devices (e.g. iPods)
Are not allowed to be used during the voyage as they detract from the voyage aims and objectives. Neither STS Young Endeavour nor the Young Endeavour Youth Scheme will accept responsibility for loss or damage.
Locker Size
Approximately 22cm x 40cm x 67cm. The contents of your kit bag can be unpacked into this space and your bag will be folded and stowed elsewhere. Try to pack no more than your kit bag can fit.
Washing facilities
You will be able to hand wash clothing and hang it out on the upper deck to dry as required.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION DETAILS
Wet Weather Gear
Waterproof jacket and pants are provided on board. These should only be used in wet weather. Please bring your own warm clothing.
Mobile Phones - will be placed in ship's safe at of the voyage.
Can be brought but not used as they detract from the objectives of the voyage. Urgent calls can be made via the ship's communication facilities (Captain's approval required). Phones will be collected at the start of the voyage and stored in the ship's safe.
Glasses / Contact Lenses
We recommend you bring two pairs of glasses, both with a secure cord/strap attached. If you wear contacts, we recommend you bring extra lenses as well as a pair of glasses with a secure cord/strap attached.
Labelling
Please label everything with your name.

PLEASE DO NOT BRING

• Knives, pocket knives, swords, firearms, concealable weapons or any other
prohibited weapon,
• Sharp objects,
• Explosives,
• Flammable items,
• Alcohol or tobacco products,
• Any non-prescribed drugs (Please declare any medication or prescription drugs you are carrying to the Young Endeavour Youth Scheme or Young Endeavour Staff Crew prior to your departure).

 

Note: The Young Endeavour Youth Scheme reserves the right to confiscate any items deemed unsuitable for the safety of the ship and crew and for the enjoyment of the voyage.
