Heading North

Hi Everyone,                      Welcome to day six of our voyage. As forecast the strong southerly change occurred during the early hours of this morning and the temperature plummeted which meant an extremely cold start to morning when the Youth Crew mustered on deck for their early morning activity at 0630.Following breakfast, morning brief and cleaning stations the anchor was weighed and whilst still in Twofold Bay the ship was brought under almost a full press of sail so that we made an impressive sight as we departed Twofold Bay. This was also a good opportunity to consolidate the previous days of sail training and it was pleasing to observe the Youth Crew work so well together in sailing the ship.By 1045 we were well clear of Twofold Bay so we altered course to the NNE and in strong 20-25kt southerly winds commenced our passage north along the NSW South Coast. This afternoon we had planned to conduct a set of demonstrational tacks but due to the strong conditions this had to be postponed until the weather improves. In its place we conducted another set of Rope Races then the Youth Crew were given some time with their Watch Leaders to fine tune their sail setting and furling skills in preparation for tomorrows Captains Setting &Furling Drills By late this afternoon we were located 3nm to the east of Bermagui sailing on a very broad starboard reach under a reduced sail plan and achieving a boat speed of 7-8kts.Overnight all of the watches will complete the Apples & Onions Exercise as we continued to make good speed towards Jervis Bay where we plan to anchor sometime tomorrow.Highlights for today have been the sightings of large pods of dolphins, and numerous breaching whales and of course more great sailing. Until tomorrow, take care. Yours Aye Captain Gav
