Day Two – Storm Bay

Hi Everyone,
Welcome to day two of our voyage. The Youth Crew awoke to a cold and blustery Tasmanian morning and were a little slow to get up on deck at 0630 for their first Early Morning Activity (EMA). A quick shower and breakfast followed then everyone mustered back on deck for Dion the Sail Masters safety aloft briefs and first climbs of the foremast. These climbs took just over two hours to complete but during this time all of the Youth Crew managed to safely make it to the topgallant yard (highest yard) which was a major achievement.

Lunch followed then just after midday we weighed anchor and commenced our 8nm pilotage out of the Derwent River and into Storm Bay. During this pilotage we conducted a short afternoon brief which was followed by a presentation on all of the ships safety equipment given by Lauren. Once completed it was straight into sail setting and furling drills and consolidation of deck safety procedures. Given the favourable winds we were able to shut down main engines and enjoyed a perfect sail through Storm Bay

As forecast the wind strengthened to 20-30kts late this afternoon which enabled us to complete our first set of tacks as a crew which successfully completed all of the afternoon’s activities. Following dinner everyone again mustered back on deck so they could witness the spectacular scenery as we transited through the narrow passage between Tasman Island and Cape Pillar. Once safely through we were hit by a strong south easterly front which meant more sail work as we altered course to the north.

The time is now 2030 and we are located 7nm to the north east of Tasman Island sailing on a very broad reach under fore and aft sail and topsail and making good a boat speed 4.5kts. Given the current forecast of strong south westerly winds we will continue to stay close to the coast as we head north along Tasmania’s spectacular East Coast.

Until tomorrow evening, take care.

Yours Aye

Captain Gav
