Hi Everyone, Welcome to day two of our voyage. It was a poor taste in music (Horto’s country selection) that awoke the Youth Crew for their first Early Morning Activity (EMA) at 0630 this morning. Breakfast followed then the Youth Crew were mustered on the port side of the bridge and introduced to the traditional ceremony of colours (Hoist Flags and Sing National Anthem) and morning brief. Once completed we conducted boy/girl chats then made preparations for our departure. At 0845 lines were cast off and we quietly departed our berth then commenced our pilotage out of the Port Adelaide River. During this pilotage the Youth Crew were given a thorough safety equipment brief by the Lauren the Ship’s Safety Equipment Officer which was followed by cleaning stations (Happy Hour) and the completion of Full Value Contracts. This afternoon as we transited south through the St Vincent Gulf the Youth Crew spent time with their respective Watch Leaders learning deck safety and how to set and furl sails. By 1545 it was reported to me that all of the watches could safely set and furl all fore and aft sails so given this information we called the ship to tacking stations and the Youth Crew successfully completed their first set of tacks as a crew. On completion of the last tack we brailed the main and furled the jib as the wind was now coming from the SSE which was nearly the direct course required for us to reach the Backstairs Passage. Early this evening the wind freshened to 25-30kts which has made it a little uncomfortable but conditions should moderate overnight. The time is now 1930 and we are just about to alter course to the SE and transit through the Backstairs Passage. Given the strong conditions we have favoured the Kangaroo Island side of the passage which should provide us with some protection from the swell and also let us enjoy the picturesque scenery. Overnight the Youth Crew will settle into their watches as we make best speed along the South Australian Coast. Until tomorrow evening, take care. Yours Aye Captain Gav
Currently transiting through the Backstairs Passage and experiencing strong to very strong 20-30kt SSE winds with a 1.5m SE swell. Our current speed is 6kts and the temperature is 18 degrees.
