21 Apr Day 6, V06/25
A somewhat emblematic sunrise met White Watch this morning with dolphins frolicking in the waves of the bow to add to the beauty of the glass sea. For twenty delicious minutes, pods of dolphins swam alongside our ship, awakening the tired Youthies from their slumber.
The day continued with an anchor at Lady Musgrave Island (the beginning of the Great Barrier Reef), where we were met with crystal clear water, revealing a whole new world beneath the surface.
As we packed our lunches, we boarded the RHIB and GPIB seaboats to prepare for a day out on the reefs. As we left, we were excited by the first sight of society in a hot while! Alas, we were able to put our nautical greeting to use, much to the amusement of the onlooking land lubbers.
After seeing the reef beneath our boats, we took a moment to reflect on our initial goals and the progress we’ve made, both as individuals, as a watch and as a ship.
We then eagerly popped our snorkel and flippers on and harnessed our inner mermaid, by ever so elegantly flopping around on the sand. After a gorgeous couple hours snorkelling alongside coral, turtles, sting rays and a flourishing array of colourful fish, we officially became salty seadogs. After a quick walk through the bird eating trees of the forest, we departed the island and said our farewells to our fishy friends.
Our day wrapped up with an ultra-intense round of Dan’s Rope Races, where competition is getting ever fiercer!!!
Our Youthies have finally adapted to life at sea and can’t wait to see what the next half of this voyage will bring. We are one with the boat, one with each other and one with the sea.
Signing off,
Kenzie, Shannon and Grace 🙂
