Day 3 – At Anchor Whitehaven Beach

Hi Everyone, Despite last nights favourable forecast (forecaster got it wrong) the wind strengthened to 28kts from the south east and the swell increased to 2 metres making it quite unpleasant for our new mariners. At 2345 we were located 10nm from the Outer Reef so the ship was called to tacking stations and we altered course to the south west and shaped a new course for the southern end of the Whitsunday Passage. Unfortunately the wind veered to the south during the middle watch which meant I had to change my original plan of sailing down through the Whitsunday Passage and anchoring at Blue Pearl Bay. Instead I chose to alter that plan and make ground to Whitsunday Island and pickup a sheltered anchorage at Whitehaven Beach. At morning brief this morning it was obvious that a number of the Youth Crew had experienced an unpleasant first night at sea and were still suffering from seasickness. Even the sighting of breaching whales and a pod of dolphins could not lift their spirits. Given this poor health it was decided to conduct a quick set of cleaning stations (Happy Hour) then stand everyone down until mid afternoon when we would require them back on deck to hand in sail and proceed into anchor. This occurred at 1530 when we entered the sheltered waters of Whitehaven Bay and proceeded to anchor just of the picturesque Whitehaven Beach. This evening with everyone feeling better we enjoyed one of Chef Chad’s fantastic dinners then conducted another set of foremast climbs. To complete the evening’s activities, Tim the Navigator gave a presentation on how to keep the ship safe at anchor then we reverted to anchor watches for the night which will ensure that everyone gets a well deserved good nights sleep. Tomorrow morning we will ferry the Youth Crew ashore so that they can stretch their legs on ‘terra firma’ and enjoy the beautiful Whitehaven Beach. Until tomorrow, take care. Yours Aye Captain Gav
