Day 3, V06/25

Day 3, V06/25

Ahoy there to all our Nautical enthusiasts following from ashore!

Day 3 of our journey started with the Morning Watch being treated to an absolutely cracking sunrise as they climbed up the foremast! Meanwhile, the rest of our intrepid crew were woken at 0700 to have another amazing breakfast from our Chef extraordinaire Kingey. Morning Brief was held at 0900 where the Youth Crew were regaled with tales of K’gari Island by the Navigator Leups and a whole host of traditional sailor superstitions by our resident ‘Salty’ encyclopedia Bec.

Straight after morning brief, the Sail Master then sent the Youth Crew to clean the ship (called Happy Hour). Daily cleaning is an essential part of life at sea. Not only does it keep the ship neat and ordered, it also protects us against getting sick. After cleaning stations the Sail Master instructed the Youth Crew in the finer arts of Tall Ship sailing with a ‘Square Sails’ Brief and a ‘Main Sail’ Brief. Thanks to the efforts of the Youthie Crew, we almost had a full press of sails out. I must say we cut a fine shadow out on the open sea!

After yet another amazing lunch, we introduced the Youth Crew to the highly competitive ‘non-competitive learning game’ Rope Races! Led by Dan the Man, the three watches went toe to toe to prove that they knew their lines, from their ropes, from sheets and tacks. After Ropies the Youth Crew got their first exposure to tacking stations, where we turn the ship using just the wind and sails. Despite the small amount of wind in the sails, the Youth Crew worked hard and managed to successfully tack and wear the ship to the satisfaction of the Sail Master.

As we settle into another night at sea, the Youth Crew are continuing to grow and learn every day. They’ve already come so far, I wonder we’re they’ll go tomorrow?
