Day 2, V06/25

Day 2, V06/25

A gorgeous sunrise over Moreton Bay broke the dawn today! Sail Master Matt Snoeks woke us up at 0630 for an early morning walk around the deck and and a quick few games to start the day. Everyone’s nose then started twitching at the delicious smells wofting from the galley. Chef Kingey had cooked up an absolute storm for breakfast with bacon, croissants and coffee breathing life into the sleepy crew onboard.

Next up, we held the Youth Crew’s inaugural Morning Brief, with a whole host of crew coming forward and imparting their nautical wisdom. The Sail Master Matt Snoeks laid out the plan for the day, the Navigator Leups educated us about the local weather and history and Salty Sea Dog Bec read out one of her excellent poems that really captured the ‘Soul’ of what it means to be onboard STS Young Endeavour. I then said a quick few words, reflecting on the previous 24 hours and read out a letter from a previous Youth Crew. The letter wished the Youth Crew of V06/25 the best of luck and imparted some heartfelt advice and perspective.

It was then straight on to First Climbs with the Staff Crew providing excellent demonstrations and oversight. I am extremely pleased to announce that all 23 Youth Crew climbed all the way to the top of the Foremast and climbed down with a massive grin on each face. I also think it’s very telling that the first question I got once they were down was “When can I do that again?!”

After a delicious lunch, we weighed anchor and started to proceed North out of Moreton Bay. That’s when the work really began, with our Youth Crew being taken through the remainder of their Deck Safety by their Watch Leaders. Once the Watch Leaders were happy, we commenced some setting and furling drills with our fore and aft sails. Loud and proud calls of “2, 6, Heave” could be heard booming across the deck as the Youth Crew got to set their first sails onboard! All of a sudden, our training dummy took an unauthorised swim over the side!! Quick as a flash the crew sprang into action and turned the ship to recover our wayward sailor. Man Overboard Drills are an essential part of keeping everyone onboard safe, plus they can also be awesome fun! The Youth Crew acquitted themselves well and helped out the Watch Leaders calmly and effectively. Great Work Youthies!

After dinner we’ve settled in for watches overnight, where the Youth Crew are going to get familiar with the Bridge, conduct some rounds of the ship and even have a go at steering her. I look forward to hearing about all the adventures they had tomorrow morning! Stay tuned for your daily fix of adventure tomorrow as we continue to sail up the QLD coast!
