Day 2 – To sea to sea

Ahoy there, dear readers. The morning of day 2 found us anchored in the lovely Quoin Anchorage, Gladstone Harbour and as the sun rose, our youthful mariners were up with a spring in their step. After an early morning activity, breakfast and morning brief, our Youthies were introduced to their climbing harnesses, then completed inspections and buddy checks before laying aloft the foremast. In a gentle southeasterly breeze, our Youthies put in a sterling effort to conquer the foremast. Pushing past fears and venturing further than own expectations would allow… I was super proud of our sea puppies, but more challenges await. Lunch however, was not one of them… Yum. Keely is an amazing chef, don’t you know!? Anyway, we weighed anchor and proceeded down the shipping channels as a more thorough survival equipment demo was conducted by our safety equipment expert, Dan. Then a little thing we like to call Happy Hour was next, as our youthful charges were instructed in the fine art of cleaning the ship. Of course this objective had the desired effect as ear to ear smiles abounded, as they dusted, mopped and polished. They couldn’t not get enough, but alas it was time for sail handling lessons. Each watch took turns setting and furling fore and aft sails, and when watch leaders reported sound progress was being made, we braced the yards and took a moment to enjoy some playful dolphins and frolicking whales, several youthies enjoyed this spectacle from the bowsprit… Lucky ducks! Unfortunately the winds were not in our favour, so we handed in all sail and motored south-east towards Hervey Bay. The sunset was stunning and as night fell, our youth crew turned-to for watches on the open bridge, where they will learn and perform helm, lookout and rounds duties overnight. Well, their training has begun and they appear to be picking up what their watch leaders are putting down… They’ll be salty sea-dogs in no time, dear readers. Until tomorrow night. Yours Aye, Captain Adam Charlie Farley.
