Day 2 – First Day at Sea

Hi Everyone,
Welcome to Day 2 of our Voyage. The Youth Crew were awake and on deck early this morning to be greeted by a brilliant Adelaide sunrise. We kicked of the morning with a “getting to know you exercise” followed by the normal huge Young Endeavour breakfast. At 0755 the Youth Crew were mustered on the port side of the bridge and introduced to the traditional ceremony of colours (raise flags and sing National Anthem) and morning brief. On completion it was straight into their first set of cleaning stations then everyone mustered back on deck to assist in preparations for our departure.

At 0945 we cast off lines then immediately manoeuvred the ship into position for our transit through the Bascule Bridge which had been scheduled to open for our departure from Port Adelaide’s Inner Harbour at 1000. Once safely through the bridge we commenced our 75min pilotage down the Port Adelaide River and out into the St Vincent Gulf.

This afternoon in near perfect conditions the Youth Crew were kept busy with deck safety and sail setting and furling drills. At 1545 tacking stations were called and the Youth Crew proved that they had “hoisted in” the previous hours of instruction by successfully completing their first set of tacks as a crew. On completion of the last tack we handed in most sail as the wind was now coming from the SSE which was exactly the course we needed and started to make good speed under engines towards the Backstairs Passage.

The time is now 2000 and the Youth Crew have now settled into their watches for the night. Currently the forecast is for favourable conditions overnight so if all goes to plan we should transit through the Backstairs Passage later this evening and start making ground along the South Australian Coast.

Until tomorrow, take care.
Yours Aye
Captain Gav
