Day 2 – Departed Gladstone Harbour

Hi Everyone,

Welcome to Day 2 of our Voyage. It was a fine Gladstone morning that greeted a well rested Youth Crew when they were woken by Taffy at 0630 and mustered up on deck for a quick ‘getting to know you’ early morning activity.

Breakfast followed with everyone enjoying the normal big Young Endeavour breakfast of Eggs, Bacon and Pancakes which were just a few of the choices on this morning’s menu. Once completed we all mustered on the port side of the bridge where the Youth Crew were introduced to the traditional ceremony of colours (raise flags and sing National Anthem) and morning brief.

Cleaning stations was next then it was straight into harness and safety aloft briefs prior to undertaking first climbs of the foremast. These climbs took three hours to complete but during this time we managed to get all of the Youth Crew safely to the topgallant yard which is was a great achievement for their first climb.

At 1350 we weighed anchor and commenced our 12nm pilotage against a 3kt flooding tide out of Gladstone Harbour. During this pilotage the Youth Crew spent time with their Watch Leaders setting and furling fore and aft sails and consolidating deck safety. By 1700 we were clear of clear of Gladstone Harbour and once the Sail Master had given a mainsail brief and set the mainsail and the jib the ship was called to tacking stations and we completed our first set of tacks as a crew which successfully completed all of our programmed activities for the day.

The time is now 2000 and the Youth Crew have settled into Watches overnight where they will take turns at helming the ship, keeping lookout and conducting hourly rounds ensuring that everything onboard is working correctly.

Given the current weather forecast of light to moderate SE winds we will continue to sail along the Central Queensland Coast overnight enjoying these perfect sailing conditions.

Until tomorrow evening, take care.

Yours Aye

Captain Gav
