Day 2 – Gladstone to sea

Ahoy dear readers, Day 2 of our voyage began alongside Gladstone, QLD today. Sailmaster Matty woke us all up at 0600 for an Early-Early Morning Activity on deck before staff crew closed up special sea dutymen and departed our berth, proceeding into Gladstone Harbour at 0700.

The plan for the day was then hatched at morning brief then Theresa, our safety equipment expert, taught YC all about our safety and survival equipment. YC then turned-to cleaning stations (AKA Happy Hour) to give the ship a good sweep and scrub and mop – A clean ship is a happy ship 🙂

Sail handling drills were next. All the while, we conducted pilotage out of the bustling Port of Gladstone (Queensland’s largest multi-commodity port and the fifth largest multi-commodity port in Australia. It is the world’s fourth largest coal exporting terminal, don’t you know!?).

Lunch was next on the agenda, then YC were back at sail handling drills with their Watch Leaders. Fore, main and topgallant staysails were set and furled numerous times to ensure everyone was familiar with their operation and handling procedures. Then, when deemed safe and competent, the jib and mainsail were set and the ship was sent to tacking stations.

The ship was tacked several times to ensure YC know where to go and how to execute a timely, efficient and safe alteration of course under sail. Of course there were some green faces folks, but that’s how it goes… and the fish were very happily fed 🙂 Impressively, crook YC cracked on regardless. Bravo.

Course was then shaped for the SSE, as the sun went down and Jarod had an amazing feast waiting for us. After dinner, Youth Crew turned-to sea watches involving a 4 hour shift of ‘watch-on-deck’ duties: helming, lookout and rounds responsibilities, while the other watches slept. What a fantastic day… well done Youth Crew.

Until tomorrow night, ladies and gents, goodnight and sleep tight.
